In 1965 Stephanie L. Kwolek succeeded in creating the first of a family of synthetic fibers of exceptional strength and stiffness. The best known member is Kevlar, a material used in fragmentation-resistant vests as well as in boats, airplanes, ropes, cables, tires, tennis racquets, skis, and so forth — in total about 200 applications.

Cathay WilliamsFemale Buffalo Solider
Cathay Williams, a truly remarkable figure in American history. Born in 1844 in Missouri to an enslaved mother and a free father, she became the only documented Black woman to serve in the U.S. Army during the 19th century—and she did so by disguising herself as a man under the name William Cathay, she enlisted in 1866, joining the 38th U.S. Infantry Regiment, one of the units known as the Buffalo Soldiers.
